Ahhh, the flavors and aromas of an apple orchard - especially a Red Delicious apple orchard!

Watch "PA Apple Marketing Program" Video.
This sweet, mild flavored apple must certainly be the best known one on the planet. Red Delicious' primary usage is fresh eating and salads but who is to say that this variety can't be used to produce people pleasing pies and a variety of other delectable baked apple dishes, too?

The Grit Newsletter fills us in on interesting historical details surrounding that first Red Delicious tree which is believed to be a seedling of an old variety named Yellow Bellflower: "Originally called ‘Hawkeye,’ the No. 1 North American eating apple is the ‘Red Delicious,’ discovered in 1870 by Jesse Hiatt, a farmer in Iowa who found a seedling in his orchard and chopped it down. When the seedling grew back, Hiatt chopped it down again. The seedling returned the third year. Hiatt said, “If thee must grow, thee may.” Hiatt cared for the seedling without realizing it would produce a greater wallop of disease-fighting oxidants, such as Vitamin C, than other apples. The original tree survived until the 1940s." (Emphasis added)

Just in case you're interested: We here at Kauffman's Fruit Farm primarily grow the Super Chief strain of Red Delicious which we believe may be the "pick of the crop!"

Old strains or new strains of Red Delicious, grown here on our farm or anywhere else. the good news is that all are equally and completely GMO-free!
Helpful Hint: Wondering how many calories might be contained in a Red Delicious apple? Find out here!

Did you know? Golden Delicious really isn't related to Red Delicious at all. The Stark Brothers nursery people, hoping to capitalize on the success of Red Delicious, gave a promising new yellow apple cultivar found in West Virginia a similiar name a few years after they renamed this red Iowan selection "Delicious."

Other more modern varieties which we grow here in Bird-in-Hand that are descendants of (and similar to) Red Delicious include Gala and Cameo.

Can you believe it? One needn't hop into a vehicle to procur fresh, fancy apples anymore! It's (very) easy to order juicy, tasty, and healthful Red Delicious apples packed in sturdy boxes from the comfort of your home and have them shipped to your door in perfect condition.

The boxes we use contain high-density foam cushioning. Each apple occupies its own foam slot for protection, and we pack the box carefully with fruit that is of highest quality. However, we have no control over distance, storage, temperature, or handling during transit, so if the fruit arrives overripe or spoiled, we most likely will not offer a refund, although you're welcome to contact us about it. We offer 2nd Business Day and Next Business Day shipping for customers like you who may wish to take an extra step in protecting your Red Delicious apples during the shipping process. This item is not available for sale in or to California, Oregon, and Washington.
