Spring Called: It's Time to Sign up for Adventure

4/18/2019 - 11:42:08 AM

Last week we celebrated and welcomed Spring with some poetry. This week, it’s Spring’s turn. Adventure is beckoning. Why not participate in an event offered right here in Lancaster County?

When winter is over, the urge to get out and get active is strong. Things are growing. The birds are busy. There’s so much going on. Getting out there to bike or run has never been so easy. We have so, many, options!

Biking and running are great, but what about climbing trees, stomping in puddles, leaping over fire, and swinging on ropes? Wait, what? Sounds like a gang of kids at a birthday party. Exactly! But no matter our age, there’s always an excited child inside-- waiting to cut loose!

C’mon! Check out these events. You can run, jump, scramble, and swim, right here in Lancaster County.

Events are listed in the order they occur. Pay attention to registration deadlines to take full advantage of discounts and other great perks. Don’t forget an apple to drink, also known as Kauffman’s Apple Cider. ;)

SHADEY'S RUGGED RUN Saturday, May 4, 2019

This year, Kauffman’s will be at Shadey’s Rugged Run providing apple cider. And if you go, be sure to watch for some of our own-- jumping fire and slogging through water. Check this one out soon because registration is filling up and it’s just around the corner!

WHAT IS SHADEY'S RUGGED RUN?

Shadey’s Rugged Run is a 3.5 mile mud and obstacle course designed to challenge participants as they go through (and under and over) mud, water, fire, walls and more! Each year, this muddy race is held at the Lancaster campus of Lancaster Bible College. But why is it called Shadey’s Rugged Run? It’s short for Esbenshade, the last name of the farmer and his wife who donated the land where LBC stands today. Our course will take you on the scenic – and muddy – route around our beautiful, sprawling campus.

Our mud run is a bit different from other runs. It’s not timed and you can skip obstacles that are too challenging for you. But don’t think for a minute this is going to be an easy race! The obstacles change each year, so you never know just what you might be facing (spoiler alert: it probably involves mud). And finally, what makes our race most is unique is that it’s created, designed and implemented by our college students. It’s true! Nearly every aspect of your experience at Shadey’s is crafted by seniors in LBC’s sports management program. And, to make your race day even more meaningful, all of the proceeds benefit Penn State Hershey Children’s Miracle Network and LBC Athletics.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a friend, sign up and let’s get muddy.

Once you’ve done one, beware, you’ll want more. No fear, check out the rest of these events to make plans. As Ellie says, “Adventure is out there!

Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon Friday, September 6, 2019

Join us for the 10th Annual Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon!  Come run with us through Amish farmlands and the Valley of No Wires.  You'll pass one-room school houses, gorgeous scenery, water stations staffed with Amish children, and run through an actual working Amish farm - not something most tourists get to do!

The finisher's medal for the half marathon has been featured in Runner's World as one of the most desired.  It's huge and heavy!  Each one unique as they are real horseshoes from real horses working these farmlands.

While this is certainly not the big city, the half marathon does have all the "usual" big city features - chip timing; tech shirts; awards handmade by local craftsman for overall, masters, and 3-deep in 5 year age groups; every turn and mile on the course marked; water stations every couple miles; fully supported race route; pace groups;  EMS; photographers; etc.  PLUS a bunch of stuff that makes this event stand out, such as hot air balloons lifting off just before the race, horse-n-buggy leading the way, whoopie pies, and a post-race spread that can't be beat!

Don't forget all the other activities that make this a jammed-packed weekend - expo, pasta dinner, kid's fun run, 5k, more hot air balloons, s'mores, and so much more.  Go to www.bihhalf.com to see pictures, videos, and read runner feedback from past years.

***But don't wait too long - there is a hard cap!  THIS RACE ALWAYS SELLS OUT!!!!  Register TODAY!!!
